Visualising Shakespeare: From Page to Stage

This event looks at the ways we ‘translate’ the visual to the textual and vice versa, using Italian contemporary Shakespeare comics and adaptations as our case studies. The event aims at creating a discussion by juxtaposing actor Marco Gambino with comics of Shakespeare by Gianni De Luca, together with Shakespeare’s first folio housed in the library’s Special Collections room where the session takes place. We ask how knowledge of sources and adaptations affects our reception.

Following Professor Grove’s overview of the visual changes introduced into De Luca’s Shakespeare comics, Gambino will present a recent translation of Othello by Italian award-winning playwright Roberto Cavosi through a series of performances and a Q&A with Dr Enza De Francisci: a unique way to unfold to an audience the complex processes involved in a performance in terms of language, production, interpretation, and direction.
