Andamento – Un viaggio in Italia
Exhibition: photographs and mosaic artworks by Joanna Kessel
An exhibition of photographs and mosaic artworks by Joanna Kessel MA RCA. Inspiration has been drawn from Joanna’s recent trips to Italy and her interest in Italian architectural mosaic. Photographic work depicts a highly personal response to ‘place’ whilst new mosaic artworks develop her observations of colour, mark and visual texture utilising the exquisite materials of gold leaf, marble and smalti.
In 2010 Joanna received a Creative Development Award from Creative Scotland to undertake a period of specialist mosaic study at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo. Joanna travelled around Italy by campervan, was away for a total of 7 weeks with her journey covering 5,126 miles. She visited sites of historic and contemporary mosaic, the Architecture Biennale in Venice, CERSAIE in Bologna, Ravenna and travelled as far south as Garavicchio to visit Il Giardino dei Tarocchi by Niki De Saint Phalle.
Joanna runs a popular mosaic course programme from her studio in Edinburgh and this year will be teaching a Residential Mosaic Course in Le Marche followed by work in a mosaic studio in Spilimbergo. www.joannakessel.co.uk
Professor Andrew Patrizio will introduce the exhibition on the Private view on Tuesday 8 May 6-8pm
During the private view there will be a slide show of images from Joanna’s journey in Italy, showing mosaic artworks and architecture by Carlo Scarpa.
